Allow us to be familiar with each other’s face
And lazy days like lost dogs
Allow the day to be grey and bleak
And take us by the scruff of our necks
Allow us to wear cloaks
And exchange passing fancies
Allow us to forget dates, addresses
And conversations like clockwork
Allow the days for prose
And nights for poems
Allow for kindness shrugged
And reasons to nourish it
Allow everything ordinary
And blank postcards
Allow words of caution
And words of disdain
Allow for years to trade for an idea
And an awful sight, the downing of a proud heart
Allow for lilacs in the palm of your hand
And a kaleidoscope of butterflies
Allow for a candle in a cold dark room
And surrender like one trick ponies
Allow for a fresh pair of cigarettes past midnight
And Cohen singing Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye
Allow the day to end for you
And the night to begin for me
Allow sanctity to the night by drawing the curtains
Allow us to sell pipe dreams to each other.
