Lucy Edmunds: space dust

i want to burn bright with the stars

the issue at hand:
a star gives
i take.

forget your compliments after i swallow them
bite off more than you offered
chew for months on end.

i just want to shine
but light could never come near me
it isn’t faster than my gluttony.
crack it between my teeth and taste it
fizzling out.

i am nothing but a dented asteroid
hoping to blaze for an infinity

to light a sky until i am
all of the colours
and more.

Lucy Edmunds

Lucy Edmunds is a sixteen-year-old poet who has been intermittently writing throughout her life, and started seriously focusing on poetry when she was twelve, writing a poem a day for several months during the pandemic. She writes as a form of self-expression, especially during emotionally challenging times, and often to explore and understand her own feelings. The poetry is written without a specific audience in mind; rather, for her own benefit, although it will strike a chord with anyone who feels like they’re too fragile for this world.
